TYPES OF CONFERENCE INTERPRETING
SIMULTANEOUS INTERPRETING
Simultaneous interpreters deliver the target language while the speaker is talking, approximately 10 seconds after the speaker. The interpreter sits in a booth wearing headphones, processes what is being said and conveys the message in its exact form by speaking into a microphone. This type of interpreting is typically used in large high-level meetings, conferences and shows.
WHISPERED INTERPRETING
Instead of using a headset and microphone, the interpreter sits next to a person or group and speaks softly while interpreting in the target language. This style of interpreting can be used, for example, in a courtroom where someone requires interpreting to make sure that all is legal exchange is understood.
CONSECUTIVE INTERPRETING
A back and forth style of interpreting, where the speaker stops after a few minutes and the interpreter steps in to deliver the message in the target language. Multiple language speakers can take turns speaking and being interpreted. Consecutive interpreting is often used in court or smaller business meetings.
